If the first few steps out of bed are the worst of your day, plantar fasciitis is the most likely explanation.

Why it hurts most in the morning

The plantar fascia shortens overnight. Standing up loads it suddenly, and the irritated tissue protests. It typically eases after a few minutes of walking, then returns after periods of rest.

What actually helps

Calf and fascia loading exercises have the strongest evidence behind them. Supportive footwear, temporary orthotic support and load management all help. Rest alone rarely resolves it.

When to get it assessed

If it has not improved within six weeks of self-care, or if the pain is sharp and localised over the heel bone, it is worth ruling out other causes with a scan.
