Specialist MSK Assessment, Ultrasound and Image-Guided Procedures
Musculoskeletal ultrasound is a non-invasive imaging investigation used to examine selected muscles, tendons, ligaments, joints and other superficial soft tissues. It can provide real-time and dynamic information, but it is not needed for every musculoskeletal problem and does not replace a clinical assessment.
When ultrasound is likely to add useful information, the clinician interprets the images alongside your symptoms, history and examination findings. Some conditions or structures cannot be fully assessed with ultrasound and may require another investigation or referral.
If an image-guided procedure may be suitable, the clinician will explain its purpose, alternatives, expected benefits, limitations and relevant risks. A procedure will take place only after an individual assessment and informed consent.
What the service may provide
Assessment by an experienced MSK clinician
Real-time imaging of selected superficial tissues
Findings interpreted with the clinical examination
A formal report where appropriate
Discussion of rehabilitation, referral or procedure options
When MSK Ultrasound May Add Useful Information
Muscle and tendon concerns
Ultrasound may help examine selected muscle and tendon injuries or changes when the result is likely to influence management.
Joint and bursal concerns
Ultrasound may help assess selected superficial joint structures, fluid, bursae and inflammatory changes.
Selected nerve concerns
Ultrasound may assist with assessment of selected superficial nerves, subject to the clinician’s verified scope of practice.
Ganglions and cysts
Ultrasound may help characterise selected superficial fluid-filled structures and inform the next step.
Sports injuries
Ultrasound may be useful for selected soft-tissue injuries. It is not appropriate for every sporting injury.
Image-guided procedures
Ultrasound may be used to guide a procedure towards the intended anatomical location. Guidance improves visualisation but does not guarantee a successful clinical outcome.
Limitations of Ultrasound
Ultrasound has limitations. It does not assess every cause of pain and may not adequately evaluate deep structures, bone interiors or all areas of the spine and joints. Imaging findings can also be present in people without symptoms. Your clinician will explain whether ultrasound, another investigation or no imaging is appropriate.

Understanding Your Options
Treatment depends on the assessment and your individual circumstances. Options may include exercise and rehabilitation, education and advice, appropriate hands-on treatment, and other interventions where clinically appropriate.
Your clinician will explain the purpose of a recommended treatment, what it involves and any relevant alternatives or considerations, so the plan is agreed with you rather than handed to you.
Not necessarily. Many musculoskeletal concerns can be assessed and managed without imaging. Ultrasound may be useful when it is likely to provide information that could affect management. Your clinician will also consider whether another investigation is more appropriate.
Not always. Ultrasound can show changes in selected tissues, but scan findings do not necessarily explain symptoms. Results are interpreted alongside your history and clinical examination.
A procedure is not automatically required for every musculoskeletal problem. Whether one is appropriate depends on the problem being assessed, your clinical circumstances and your clinician’s judgement.
Where a procedure is being considered, your clinician will discuss the purpose, the expected benefits, the relevant risks and the alternatives with you before anything is agreed.
